Mass
in Honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe
"We entrust to Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of Mexico
and of the entire continent,
the future of the Americas and its new evangelization."
- Pope John Paul II, January 1999
The Most
Reverend John J. Myers, J.C.D., D.D., Archbishop of Newark, will
celebrate the Mass in Honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness
of Mexico and Empress of the Americas, on Sunday, December 9, 2001,
at 3 pm, at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Newark.
The Virgin
Mother appeared in Tepeyec to the now beatified Juan Diego, a poor
peasant, in 1531. As a sign of proof of her appearance, the Virgin
Mother made roses appear in that same place, and also caused her
image to become permanently imprinted on a cloth carried by Juan
Diego.
The miraculous image of the Virgin of Guadalupe is venerated in
Mexico (and worldwide), with great devotion. Many of the miracles
that have occurred for those who pray to the Virgin of Guadalupe
have been so extraordinary that the possibility of divine intervention
is undeniable.
Last year, more than 1,000 people attended the Mass. Archbishop
Myers has commented, "Because she is the Empress of the Americas,
this Mass is a significant devotion not only for Hispanics, but
for all Catholics on our continent. In addition, this feast day
is also an important symbol of the profound faith of our Hispanic
community here in Newark."
