Statement from Archbishop Theodore E. McCarrick Regarding Announcement of Christmas in Cuba

"I was delighted to learn about the decision of the government of Cuba to reinstate Christmas as a holiday. Years ago on one of my first visits to Cuba I recall asking the then Archbishop Ortega what would be the most important wishes he had for the future of the Church. Without hesitation, he mentioned being able to celebrate Christmas as one of the really important ones. I know how much the Christian people of Cuba rejoiced at being able to celebrate it last year for the first time. Now it has been restored permanently and they have reason to rejoice anew. I believe this too is a good result of the Holy Father's visit to Cuba and a sign that other good things will come. It gives us all hope for the future of that beautiful land."
