Christmas
Spirit Glows within the Archdiocese of Newark
Throughout the four counties in the Archdiocese of Newark- Bergen,
Essex, Hudson and Union- the Christmas Season will be celebrated
with pageants, carol sings, and special Masses. At the Cathedral
Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, 89 Ridge St., Newark, Archbishop
John J. Myers will celebrate Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. He
will also celebrate Mass on Christmas morning at St. Anthonys
Parish, 63 Franklin St., Belleville, at 8 a.m.
The Cathedral Basilica will once again glow with the Christmas Spirit
as the Archbishop welcomes everyone to the 31st annual Candlelight
Carol Sing, Tuesday, December 11, 2001, at 8 p.m.
A tradition for 31 years in the Cathedral Concert Series, the Carol
Sing has become one of the most significant Christmas concerts in
Northern New Jersey. Conducted by Cathedral Director of Music Ministry
John J. Miller, the choir will feature the fiery Christmas Cantata
by Daniel Pinkham, along with traditional Christmas Carols.
Well over 2,000 attendees will be invited to join in the celebration
as they sing favored Christmas hymns. The Cathedral Basilica will
be set aglow with candlelight when all the participants join in
the traditional performance of Silent Night. The ambiance of candlelight
and seasonal decor along with the Cathedral Choir, organ, brass,
percussion and thousands of participants combine to create a heartwarming
experience.
The doors open at 7 p.m., and admission is free, but a free-will
offering will be accepted to help defray the cost of the performance.
