Archdiocese
of Newark Set Aglow with the Christmas Spirit
Throughout
the four counties in the Archdiocese of Newark - Bergen, Essex,
Hudson and Union - the Christmas Season will be celebrated with
pageants, carol sings, and special Masses. At the Cathedral Basilica
of the Sacred Heart in Newark, 89 Ridge St., Newark, Archbishop
Theodore E. McCarrick will celebrate Midnight Mass on Christmas
Eve.
The
Cathedral Basilica will once again glow with the Christmas Spirit
as the Archbishop welcomes attendees to the 30th annual Candlelight
Carol Sing, Tuesday, December 19, 2000, at 8 p.m.
Known
for its musical excellence, the Cathedral Basilica Choir will perform
songs from composers all over the world. The Cathedral Basilica
Great Organ and Brass Ensemble, accompanied by organist Pablo Fernandez,
under the direction of John J. Miller, are also scheduled to perform.
Well
over 2,000 attendees will be invited to join in the celebration
as they sing favored Christmas hymns. The Cathedral Basilica will
be set aglow with candlelight when all the participants join in
the traditional performance of Silent Night.
Admission
is free, but a free-will offering will be accepted to help defray
the cost of the performance. For more information on the Candlelight

The
Annual televised Christmas Mass will be celebrated by Most Reverend
Arthur Serratelli, Bishop of Essex County. The Mass will be viewed
by millions of Catholics, including the homebound and hospitalized
from throughout the greater New York / New Jersey area, and will
air at 9 a.m. on Christmas Day on WWOR-Channel 9.
Rev.
Thomas Iwanowski, Associate Director of the Office of Worship for
the Archdiocese of Newark, will serve as the Master of Ceremonies,
and Rev. Mr. Nigel Mohammed of Immaculate Conception Seminary, will
act as Deacon to the Bishop.
The
choir of Our Lady of Czestochowa, Jersey City, under the direction
of Robert Ossi, will provide music for the celebration. Ossi will
accompany the choir on the keyboard, along with Erin James on flute
and Jim Ferry on guitar. Mary Ellen Argentieri Theel, of St. Agnes
RC Church in Clark, will serve as both cantor and psalmist. Readers
include Dan Zister and Terry McCabe. Parishioners from Our Lady
of Czestochowa will fill the congregation.
