Archdiocese of Newark Set Aglow with the Christmas Spirit

Throughout the four counties in the Archdiocese of Newark - Bergen, Essex, Hudson and Union - the Christmas Season will be celebrated with pageants, carol sings, and special Masses. At the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, 89 Ridge St., Newark, Archbishop Theodore E. McCarrick will celebrate Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve.

The Cathedral Basilica will once again glow with the Christmas Spirit as the Archbishop welcomes attendees to the 30th annual Candlelight Carol Sing, Tuesday, December 19, 2000, at 8 p.m.

Known for its musical excellence, the Cathedral Basilica Choir will perform songs from composers all over the world. The Cathedral Basilica Great Organ and Brass Ensemble, accompanied by organist Pablo Fernandez, under the direction of John J. Miller, are also scheduled to perform.

Well over 2,000 attendees will be invited to join in the celebration as they sing favored Christmas hymns. The Cathedral Basilica will be set aglow with candlelight when all the participants join in the traditional performance of Silent Night.

Admission is free, but a free-will offering will be accepted to help defray the cost of the performance. For more information on the Candlelight Carol Sing, call the Cathedral Music Office at (973) 484-2400.

The Annual televised Christmas Mass will be celebrated by Most Reverend Arthur Serratelli, Bishop of Essex County. The Mass will be viewed by millions of Catholics, including the homebound and hospitalized from throughout the greater New York / New Jersey area, and will air at 9 a.m. on Christmas Day on WWOR-Channel 9.

Rev. Thomas Iwanowski, Associate Director of the Office of Worship for the Archdiocese of Newark, will serve as the Master of Ceremonies, and Rev. Mr. Nigel Mohammed of Immaculate Conception Seminary, will act as Deacon to the Bishop.

The choir of Our Lady of Czestochowa, Jersey City, under the direction of Robert Ossi, will provide music for the celebration. Ossi will accompany the choir on the keyboard, along with Erin James on flute and Jim Ferry on guitar. Mary Ellen Argentieri Theel, of St. Agnes RC Church in Clark, will serve as both cantor and psalmist. Readers include Dan Zister and Terry McCabe. Parishioners from Our Lady of Czestochowa will fill the congregation.

The Christmas Mass is a public service production of WWOR-TV in cooperation with the Archdiocese of Newark.
