Archdiocese provides Communities for Religious Retirement

The 1999 Collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious (RFR) will be taken this weekend, December 11 and 12, 1999. Pastors throughout the Archdiocese of Newark are inviting a sister, brother or priest to speak about the fund and its importance.

Founded in 1986, RFR collects donations to help offset the estimated $7 billion needed to provide for the retired men and women who help build and run religious institutions. In 1998, the fund collected over $27 million that was distributed to 42,177 residents nationwide, in 498 institutes caring for the retired religious. New Jersey facilities received $1.2 million, over half of which went to religious communities in the Archdiocese.

"As we continue our support and encouragement of all that work toward the success of this appeal, we participate in one of the most worthy and successful initiatives the U.S. Church has undertaken," said Archbishop Theodore E. McCarrick about the annual RFR collection.

The National Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, the Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious, and the Conference of Major Superiors of Men sponsor the Retirement Fund for Religious appeal.
