Statement of The Most Reverend Theodore E. McCarrick, Archbishop of Newark, on the Passing of The Most Reverend James T. McHugh, Bishop of Rockville Center The death of Bishop James McHugh is a loss for the Church of Rockville Center and, indeed, for the Catholic Church in our country, since he truly was a courageous and articulate leader in so many ways, and especially in the defense of unborn human life. For us in the Archdiocese of Newark and for me it is a personal loss. Bishop McHugh was one of the first priests that I had the privilege to consecrate as a bishop. He was also the first one to die. I have never known a braver, more dedicated man of God. We will all miss his clear and constant voice. May his crusade for the protection of human life from the moment of conception to the moment of natural death continue to be championed by all of us who were touched by his presence in our lives. Note to Editors: Bishop McHugh passed away on Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000 after a long battle with cancer.
