Archdiocese of Newark Goes On-Line
www.rcan.org

Looking for a Catholic School or parish in northern New Jersey? Want to know something about the Catholic Church? Information is now on-line.

The Archdiocese of Newark has gone on-line with an extensive Web site. Visitors to the site can access information about ministries of the Archdiocese and obtain information about parishes, schools and many other facets of the Catholic Church. The site is located at www.rcan.org as of today.

The opening page of the Web site is highly visual and reflects the diversity of the people of the Archdiocese. Visitors to the site will be able to immediately access an index reflecting varied areas of interest. There is a History of the Archdiocese and a page highlighting the Cathedral Basilica with pictures.

For those wanting information about parishes there is a complete directory with Mass schedules. Facts and Figures about the demographics of the Archdiocese, a Catholic Education page, Pastoral Letters, articles written by Archbishop McCarrick and an outline of the Administration of the Archdiocese are quickly available. The section on Offices and Agencies offers a series of FAQ's (frequently asked questions) about those entities. These range from queries about family life, social issues, vocations, annulments, to Black Catholic Affairs and many other areas of interest.

Archbishop McCarrick welcomes site visitors with a message that states "Welcome to the home page of the Archdiocese of Newark. I hope that you will find it reflects our dedication to serving the people of God in northern New Jersey." He added that the site was meant "to serve all people of good will who wish to learn more about who and what we are and why we are dedicated followers of the Gospel message."

The construction of the site was overseen by a technology committee appointed by Monsignor Ronald Rozniak, Vicar General of the Archdiocese. The site has been in the construction stage for the past six months and was designed by Elizabeth Melillo, a member of the Computing Services Department of the Archdiocese and a freelance Web site designer.

The site also offers links to Web sites at Seton Hall University, the Catholic Advocate newspaper, the Vatican, the National Conference of Catholic Bishops and several parishes which have their own Web pages. There are links to other Catholic resources. These will continue to grow as construction of the site will be a dynamic, on-going project.

"The Archdiocese believes that this Web site is one of the most comprehensive Archdiocesan sites available on the World Wide Web," said Communications Director Michael Hurley.

A special feature of the Web site is a nostalgic review of Pope John Paul II's visit to Newark in 1995 complete with photographs of his arrival, Cathedral Basilica visit and Giant Stadium Mass.

The site has been registered with all major search engines and should be accessed easily by anyone looking for information about the Archdiocese of Newark, the Catholic Church, parishes or Catholic institutions.

"The public can respond directly to some offices by e-mail or can reach them through a query to the Webmaster e-mail response system built into the Web pages," Hurley said.
