A Christmas
Message From Archbishop McCarrick
The following
is a Christmas message from the Most Rev. Theodore E. McCarrick,
Archbishop of Newark, to the people of the Archdiocese of Newark:
"As Christmas
was coming this year, I found myself still in Rome at the Synod
For America. As the great Nativity Crib was being reassembled in
St. Peter's Square and the Lights of the Eternal City took on a
Christmas glow, I thought more and more of home and how good it
would be to share this great feast with all of you in Newark.
"That
nostalgic longing gives way to a deeper theological truth. Our Lord
Jesus came to be with us at Christmas. As Saint Paul writes to the
Philippians, He emptied Himself to be born in our likeness, taking
on our human nature so that He could share our lives, our world,
our joys and our pains. As I rejoiced to look forward to being home
for the great celebration of His birth, I realized again not only
that it is so great a gift to be at home at Christmas, but it is
the Lord Whose coming to our home makes each one of us - whatever
race or nationality or place in society - brothers and sisters in
the family home of a loving God!
"Merry
Christmas! May the grace of being at home with God stay with you
all the New Year through."
