Archbishop
Theodore E. McCarrick's 1999 Christmas Message
"As we
are about to celebrate the last Christmas of the century, the last
Christmas of the second millennium of the Christian era, we begin
the Great Jubilee. We begin a time of soul searching, of meditation,
of reflection on the goodness and greatness of God, on His extraordinary
love for us and of our need to reach out from the confining weakness
of our mortal lives so that we may touch him and hear Him and speak
to Him and truly become part of His one human family.
"The
child whose birth we celebrate as we approach the 2000th year of
his coming, calls out to us again in the song which the angels sang
some twenty centuries ago. Will the world now hear the message of
peace to men and women of good will? Will you hear it? Will I hear
it? Will it change my life? Will it change yours? If it does, then
this will be the greatest of all Christmases for us and the year
that is to come will truly know what this new born Child has come
to bring the deepest happiness, the deepest holiness and the deepest
love.
"Merry
Christmas and may the new century bring love and peace to all our
brothers and sisters in GodŐs one family."
