The Scholarship Fund for Inner City Children of the Archdiocese of Newark elected two new members to its board of trustees on Tuesday, October 15, 1998. The board, which now has 32 members, is composed of business leaders from throughout the Archdiocese and northern New Jersey.

The new trustees are Edward P. Bond, president and partner of Bederson & Company of West Orange, and Gregory Brewer, vice president of human resources for the CIT Group.

Edward Bond of Convent Station, NJ, is licensed as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in New York and New Jersey, as a Certified Insolvency and Reorganization Accountant (CIRA), and as a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE). He is president of the New Jersey Board of Accountancy, and his professional memberships include the American Institute of CPAs, the American Bankruptcy Institute, the Association of Insolvency Accountants and the National Association of Bankruptcy Trustees. He has maintained a leadership position in the financial and business communities for more than 35 years.

He also serves on the boards of directors for Crossroads Theater in New Brunswick, the New Jersey Urban Banker's Association and the H.E.R.O.S (Helping Everyone Realize Outstanding Success) mentoring organization.

Executive Director of the Scholarship Fund Kevin Moriarty said that he is confident that the new trustees will be a great resource for the Fund. "These two individuals are special people and will be an indispensable asset to the Scholarship Fund," he said. "We feel that the gifts they will bring to the table will elevate the efforts of our board to a whole new level."

The Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children provides scholarships for needy children who attend Catholic schools in Essex, Hudson, Union and Bergen Counties. It also administers special programs in Newark, Jersey City and Elizabeth that provide scholarships to students attending private schools other than Catholic schools.

It has funded 21,000 scholarships since its operations began in 1983. It has distributed more than $7.2 million. During the 1998-99 school year, it will distribute $1,041,000 to 1,920 elementary and high school students. The Fund depends on contributions from private and public donations for its scholarships. The Scholarship Fund is sponsored by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark, but it does not limit its recipients to members of the Catholic faith. More than half of the scholarship recipients are not Catholic.
