Statement of The Most Reverend John J. Myers, Archbishop of Newark,
On the Appointment of Bishop-Elect Edgar da Cunha, S.D.V.,
As Auxiliary Bishop of Newark
Today, on this feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Holy Father’s appointment of Bishop-elect Edgar da Cunha is a great gift to the Archdiocese of Newark. For we have been given as a new bishop a priest after the Heart of Jesus.

Bishop-elect da Cunha brings both the dedication of a zealous pastor and a committed religious to the Office of Bishop. In this time when the Church is acutely aware of her need for vocations, our new bishop-elect comes from a religious community whose apostolate is the fostering of vocations. In the local Church of Newark that embraces people of so many cultures, our new bishop-elect brings the care and compassion, the experience and wisdom of serving those who speak English, Portuguese, Spanish and Italian. Bishop-elect da Cunha is pastor of Newark’s St. Michael’s parish and is the Delegate of the Superior General of the Society of Divine Vocations in this country. He graduated from our seminary, has been working extensively in our Archdiocese, and has been involved in the religious formation of members of his community.

He is the first Brazilian bishop in the U.S. He is the first bishop from his religious community. And we know God will enrich our Archdiocese and the Church with the blessing of his Episcopal ministry for many years to come.
