of In restating the moral reasons for opposition to the recognition of homosexual unions, the Considerations reaffirm Church teaching that the sacrament of marriage is a life-long commitment between a man and a woman, and not an arbitrary construction that can be formed or reshaped for personal preference. The complementary nature of marriage – the joining of man and woman -- is integral to God’s creation, and the foundation for society and culture. Its most instructive purpose is to remind all Catholics – whether or not in political life – of their obligations as witness to faith to defend the basic values that belong to the common inheritance of humanity for the good of men and women.
