Statement of The Most Reverend John J. Myers, Archbishop of Newark, on the Appointment of The Most Reverend Nicholas A. DiMarzio as Bishop of Brooklyn

It is with great pleasure that I congratulate Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio on his appointment by Pope John Paul II as Bishop of the Church of Brooklyn. As a native son of Newark, he served this Archdiocese well and faithfully as a parish priest, as head of our social services agency, and as an auxiliary bishop. He also served the people of New Jersey in many ways over the last few years as Bishop of Camden and as head of the New Jersey Catholic Conference Public Policy Committee.

Through his efforts the Catholic Church in New Jersey has been instrumental in bringing to the forefront a number of social issues and challenges that we have needed to face. In this area, among many, I have been grateful for his collaboration and support to me personally.

As a priest who has served in urban dioceses, Bishop DiMarzio understands the challenges that the presbyterate, religious and lay men and women face. I am confident that he will be the excellent pastor and spiritual leader that the people of the Church in Brooklyn deserve.
