Statement of the Most Rev. Edgar M. da Cunha, S.D.V. on the Day of his Episcopal Ordination as Titular Bishop of Ucres and Auxiliary Bishop of Newark

Your Eminences, Cardinal Bevilaqua, Cardinal McCarrick, Cardinal Egan, Your Grace, Archbishop Myers, Bishops, Priests, Deacons, Religious, Brothers and Sisters.

As this beautiful celebration unfolded in this majestic Cathedral here this afternoon, one question kept coming to my mind: “What am I doing here?” And the voice of God within me said: “I called you and brought you here”. I say this with the hope that it becomes as clear to all of you as it is to me that this is all God’s doing. And I thank him for it. I wish to thank the Holy Father for entrusting this important mission to me, I thank Archbishop Myers for his support, and his trust and confidence in me, and I look forward to working with him. I thank all my brother bishops from the Archdiocese of Newark and throughout the country, for their support, for their prayers and for their presence here today. I thank my brother priests, my family, my religious community of the Vocationist Fathers, the Vocationist Sisters, our dear parishioners and staff of St. Michael’s Parish, parishioners of St. Nicholas Parish, confreres and staff from Florham park, friends who came from other parishes and towns throughout the Archdiocese and the State. I want you all to know how important it is for me and for the church that you are here today. Your presence, you faith, your prayers and your friendship are all deeply appreciated. We are making history here today and you are part of this historical moment. The first Brazilian to become a bishop in USA and the first Vocationist to become a bishop. I say this with the humility of one who is absolutely certain that it is not my own merit that made this happen, but the goodness of the Lord. He made this happen. He brought me here. His hand is at work in all this. All I had to do was say Yes.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas: Hoy es un dia de gran alegría para todos nosotros, para todos los hispanos y para todos los latinos. Yo estoy aquí delante de ustedes humildemente con la seguridad de que Dios me ha escogido para este ministerio episcopal. Agradezco a todos los que han sido instrumente en me formación religiosa y sacerdotal. Agradezco a todas la personas que tocaron me vida con su fe, con su amistad, con su cariño y con sus oraciones. Quiero que ustedes sepan que ustedes son muy importante para mi. Ustedes han sido importante en mi vida y continuaran siendo importante. Su fe, su amistad y sus oraciones continúan siendo importante para mi. Nunca si olviden de mi y yo jamas me olvidare de ustedes.

Carissimi Fratelli e Sorelle:
Un ringraziamento speciale ai confratelli Vocazionisti che sono venuti dall’Italia per essere presente a questa celebrazione qui oggi. Al Pe. Generale, ai Padri Generali Emeritus, D. Castiglioni e D. Capraro. Oggi è un giorno di grande gioia anche per tuta la congregazione Vocazionista, perche uno dei suoi figli è stato chiamato a servire la Chiesa nel ministero Episcopale. Sono sicuro che il nostro Padre Fondatore, Ven. Giustino Russolillo, dal cielo, sta molto felice e intercede per tutti noi davanti a Dio. A tutti voi, fratelli e sorelle, delle diverse parrocchie della archidiocesi di Newark, il mio sincero ringraziamento dal fondo del mio cuore per la vostra presenza, per il vostro appoggio e per le vostre preghiere. Non dimenticativi di continuare a pregare per me. Se io ho ha avuto bisogno di preghiere per prepararmi per questo giorno, me hanno detto che dopo di questo, ho ancora più bisogno di preghiere. Vi assicuro che avete in me un amico, un fratello.

Caríssimos irmãos, amigos, familiares:
É imensa a minha alegria ter vocês todos aqui comigo hoje, nesse dia especial para mim, para minha família, para a Congregação Vocacionista e para a Igreja de Newark. A minha nomeação foi para mim a maior prova de que Deus está encarregado de minha vida. Nada do que aconteceu na minha vida, teria acontecido, se não fosse a mão de Deus. Eu não poderia estar onde estou, se não fosse tudo isso determinado e guiado por Ele. Por isso, hoje, eu agradeço a Deus, agradeço ao Santo Padre o Papa João Paulo II, agradeço ao Arcebispo Myers pela confiança e por ter permitido que esse dom de Deus me fosse outorgado. Agradeço de maneira especial ao meus pais, irmãos e toda minha família pelo apoio, e pelo amor e união que existe entre nós.
Obrigado aos meus compatriotas e amigos Brasileiros por seu apoio, carinho e amizade. Obrigado aos meus amigos e irmãos portugueses que sempre nos consideramos parte da mesma comunidade pela lingua comum que nos une. Peço-lhes que continuem rezando por mim e tenham certeza de que podem contar com as minhas orações. Quero continuar contando com o apoio e a amizade de todos vocês e estejam certos de que podem continuar contando com um amigo aqui na Arquidiocese de Newark.
