Catechetical Office of the Archdiocese of Newark to Offer “Spotlight on the Catechism”

The Catechetical Office of the Archdiocese of Newark will offer a series of courses this fall, “Spotlight on the Catechism,” throughout the Archdiocese on Oct. 8, 15 and 22, to make the 600-plus page document – a thorough and authoritative statement on the basic beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church – more accessible to the general public.

The series offers four courses – one on each of the four parts of the Catechism – to be held at a number of different parishes. Courses are offered each spring and fall so that, over a two-year period, participants can attend all four parts of the series at a single location.

In the past, “Spotlight on the Catechism” courses have been offered in each of the four counties of the Archdiocese of Newark. This year, the program will be held at two new sites in Bergen County, in Ramsey and Cresskill. All sessions meet from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m.

The topics include “Spotlight on Faith: Dialogue on Our Understanding of the Church,” at Sacred Heart Parish in Bloomfield; “Spotlight on Sacraments: Sacraments of Initiation,” at St. Michael Church, Union; “Spotlight on Morality: Our Moral Life: Living in True Freedom,” at St. Therese Church, Cresskill; “Spotlight on Prayer: The Lord’s Prayer,” at Our Lady of Mercy Church, Jersey City; and “Spotlight on Prayer: Praying Our Traditions,” at St. Paul Parish, Ramsey.

According to Dr. Eugene Tozzi of the Catechetical Office, "These courses are of general interest to all who might want to learn more about the central teachings of the Catholic faith. They may be of particular interest to parents or those active in parish activities."

Registration for each course is $25 per person. Courses are open to the general public. Catechists and teachers in parish religious education programs and in Catholic schools can also earn doctrinal certification through these courses.
