Catholic Academy Principal Appointed Mr. Butchko has a BA in History and American Studies from Rutgers University and an MA in Administration and Supervision from Saint Peter's College. In addition he holds certification from the state of New Jersey as a social studies teacher and is eligible for administrative certification. For the past 23 years, he has served in educational ministry at Union Catholic Regional High School, Scotch Plains. At Union Catholic, he was a social studies teacher, departmental mentor for novice teachers, and wing supervisor responsible for the administration of homerooms and student deportment/ discipline. Mr. Butchko immersed himself in the cultural and athletic activities of Union Catholic by founding and moderating the history club and serving as student council advisor for four years. He coached the tennis and soccer teams; and currently coaches the bowling team. Mr. Butchko also taught seventh and eighth grades at The Milton School, Milburn, and St. Cecilia High School, Kearny, where he served as teacher and athletic director. Union Catholic principal Sister Percylee Hart called her new colleague “a valued member of the UC community for 23 years. He has made quality contributions to the school and has been a positive difference in the lives of the students. Michael Butchko has been faithful to the mission of UC in providing a quality education in a faith-based environment. He will bring unwavering commitment, professional competence and genuine compassion to the Hillside Catholic Academy community.” Outside of his educational career, Mr. Butchko spent seven years working with the Morris Plains borough council, six as a councilman and one as council president. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus and has taught religious education at his home parish, Saint Virgil's Parish, Morris Plains in the Diocese of Paterson.
