Statement by The Most Reverend John J. Myers, Archbishop of Newark,
On the confirmation of Samuel Alito as Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court


I congratulate President Bush on his appointment of Samuel A. Alito Jr., as associate justice of the US Supreme Court, and I congratulate Justice Alito and his family on his confirmation today by the US Senate. I am looking forward to the opportunity to congratulate him personally in the near future.

Throughout this confirmation process, Justice Alito demonstrated great dignity and expertise. He showed us all that he is a good and faithful man, respected by the members of his profession, eminently qualified to serve, and committed to the rule of law and the US Constitution.

His fellow parishioners at Most Blessed Sacrament, Roseland and I will always keep him in our prayers, asking Our Lord to grant him wisdom as he deliberates on the important matters of the Court, and strength to remain true to his convictions.
