Hudson
Catholic Regional High School Names President-Principal
The post of President-Principal is a new position at Hudson Catholic,
which in late 2004 announced that it would restructure the school’s
administrative management plan to reflect the changing and more
complex educational and fiscal needs of Catholic secondary education
in the 21st century. This restructuring recognizes the demands that
external affairs place on the leadership of a competitive and dynamic
high school. In this model, the associate principal serves as the
chief operating officer (COO) of a business, responsible for the
day-to-day operations of a school. The President-Principal, by comparison,
acts much like a corporate chief executive officer (CEO). “His early years of teaching at Paramus Catholic provide a certain familiarity with Lasallian schools,” he continued, “and I was particularly impressed with how compatible his personal philosophy of education is with that of the Brothers and our partners.” The DeLaSalle Christian Brothers have operated Hudson Catholic since its founding in 1964. Dr. Ward brings to Hudson Catholic some 30 years of experience in Catholic education as both a teacher and administrator. Between 1975 and 1983, he taught in both the New York and Newark Archdioceses at St. Nicholas of Tolentine High School, Bronx, and Msgr. Farrell High School, Staten Island, and Paramus Catholic Boys High School, Paramus. From 1978 until 1986, he also served as principal of St. Nicholas of Tolentine’s Summer High School program. Moving from teaching to administration in 1983, Dr. Ward spent 20 years in positions of increasing responsibility within the Education Vicariate of the New York Archdiocese, including director of school personnel, associate superintendent for personnel, and deputy superintendent of schools. From 2003 until 2005, he developed and managed the Safe Environment Program of the Archdiocese of New York, which included instituting a code of conduct, background screening, and sexual abuse awareness training for all staff and volunteers in Archdiocesan programs and parishes. Of
his appointment at Hudson Catholic, Ward said: “I think the
operating model that Hudson Catholic is adopting for the future
makes sense in today’s educational environment because we
ask principals to do so much. Years ago, a principal could concern
him or herself primarily with supervising the academic elements
of the school, the teachers and the curriculum. “To be the first school leader of this type at Hudson Catholic is a great privilege. I am very fortunate to be working with people I know and respect, such as associate principal Brother Patrick Cassidy.” Paul Ward holds a doctorate in educational administration and supervision from Seton Hall University. He earned a Master of Science degree in industrial labor relations through a joint program of Baruch College, CUNY and Cornell University, a Master of Arts in History at Hunter College, CUNY, and a Bachelor of Arts in History from St. John’s University. He holds permanent certification from New York as a School District Administrator, Grade 7-12 Social Studies Teacher and Driver Education Teacher, and permanent certification from New Jersey as a Grade 7-12 Social Studies Teacher. He
is an adjunct faculty member at Seton Hall University, and he has
also taught as an adjunct at Long Island University and Manhattan
College. He has been a frequent conference presenter for the National
Catholic Education Association, the New York State Non-Public School
Administrators, Fordham University’s Summer Forum, Manhattan
College’s Summer Institute in Catholic Identity, and at various
dioceses and schools throughout the United States. Hudson Catholic Regional High School, located at 790 Bergen Avenue, Jersey City, is a Catholic college preparatory school in the tradition of the DeLaSalle Christian Brothers that prepares young men for the real world. The Hudson Catholic experience emphasizes spiritual, social and physical values, while encouraging individual development and responsibility to the community. The Lasallian tradition of excellence lives on in the 5,500+ alumni who have passed through its halls. Today, Hudson Catholic Regional High School current serves some 575 young men in grades 9-12.
