Over many decades, the Catholic Bishops of New Jersey consistently called for the abolishment of the death penalty. Thank God, on December 17, 2007, New Jersey became the first state in forty years to enact a law to eliminate the death penalty. Groups across the globe hailed the enactment of New Jersey’s law as a victory for the dignity of life.

It is a concern I share as well. My siblings and I are products of Catholic schools. I served in parishes with Catholic schools as a parish priest and pastor.

Catholics in the Archdiocese of Newark will have the opportunity to “give to those who have given a lifetime” as part of the collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious, to be held Dec. 2-3. Coordinated by the National Religious Retirement Office, the annual appeal benefits 32,000 elderly Catholic sisters, brothers and religious order priests whose congregations lack adequate retirement funding.

Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark is pleased to announce a $20,000 toy donation from the Kefalas-Pinto Foundation along with Discovery Toys, which will provide an array of age-appropriate educational toys for hundreds of children involved with their programs throughout Bergen, Essex, Hudson and Union Counties.

The Archdiocese of Newark will celebrate the 25th Annual Mass for Law Enforcement Officers at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 9 at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Clifton Avenue and Victoria Avenue, Newark NJ. Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., Archbishop of Newark, will serve as the principal celebrant and homilist.

On Thursday, September 28, 2017, the U.S. Department of Education recognized 342 schools across the United States as National Blue Ribbon Schools based on their academic excellence, or their progress in closing achievement gaps. Of the 342 schools that received the award, 17 are located in New Jersey, and five are Catholic schools within the Archdiocese of Newark.

On Friday, October 6, administration and staff of Paramus Catholic High School summoned local police to the campus following an altercation involving several student members of the football program and a member of the football coaching staff. At that time and in the days since, the school has taken all necessary steps to address this incident appropriately according to our policies and protocols, and in cooperation with local authorities.
