Students at St. Aloysius Elementary Academy in Jersey City have risen to the challenge of keeping the school’s First in Math® winning streak alive! For the third year in a row, 8th grade students have added the title of  “#1 First in Math® Team in the Nation” to their list of accomplishments.

The Most Reverend John J. Myers has announced the appointment of eleven new members of the Board of Trustees of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark. In making the announcement, Archbishop Myers noted that the diverse experience of the new members and their personal commitment to the underprivileged will enhance the mission and work of Catholic Charities during this Year of Mercy.

On Saturday, May 28, the Archdiocese of Newark again will rank among the top dioceses in the nation in terms of new priests when ten men are ordained to the priesthood for service in the Archdiocese. The Ordination will take place beginning at noon in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, 89 Ridge Street in Newark.

The Archdiocese of Newark Catholic Cemeteries, in collaboration with more than one thousand Catholic Cemeteries nationwide, will participate in the annual celebration, "Serving God and Country: A Memorial Day Salute to Our Heroes" on Monday, May 30 at its local cemeteries and parishes.

For nearly 73 years, the body of Titanic hero Robert John Hopkins has rested in an unmarked grave in Holy Name Cemetery in Jersey City. Today, a polished black granite headstone bearing his name was unveiled by his family and blessed by Bishop John W. Flesey.

The Most Reverend John J. Myers was the principal celebrant at the Mass of Dedication of a new chapel at the recently opened Saint John Paul II Center in Krakow, Poland. The Center is a new and evolving complex celebrating the life and teachings of this great Bishop, Pope, and Saint.

Following recent news reports about high levels of lead in the drinking water in the public schools of Newark and other New Jersey municipalities, Archbishop Myers directed that the five Catholic elementary schools and three Catholic high schools in the City of Newark cease using tap water while testing could be conducted, and use only bottled water for drinking or cooking purposes.

Late Friday, a federal judge denied the state of New Jersey’s motion to dismiss the Archdiocese of Newark’s constitutional challenge to a law that makes it illegal for the Archdiocese to sell headstones to its parishioners. The court ruled that the Archdiocese’s case deserves a full hearing.
